Seeing the growing interest for the benzoyl peroxide products and treatments for acne, I made a decision last week to register a new site where I’ll continue to add more on Benzoyl Peroxide acne treatments. The site I try to make concentrates on giving free advices and information for those interested not only in treating their acne with b. peroxide, but also, to those which want to know more and more about the acne origins and so to better understand it and fight it.

Benzoyl Peroxide with Erythromycin to Prevent Antibiotic- Resistant Bacteria in Acne

Erythromycin-resistant strains of Propionibacterium acnes, first described in the late 1970s, appear to be becoming a significant clinical problem. Researchers in Britain previously reported that 25% of patients at their large acne center have erythromycin-resistant P. acnes on their skin, and they recently showed that patients with predominantly resistant P. acnes fail to respond to oral erythromycin therapy. In an effort to ensure the continued efficacy of erythromycin in acne therapy, these researchers investigated whether benzoyl peroxide, a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, adds to the antibacterial effect of erythromycin.

Benzoyl peroxide was tested alone and in combination with erythromycin against 40 erythromycin-sensitive and -resistant strains of Staphylococcus epidermis and proprionibacteria in vitro. In most of the bacterial strains, the combination of agents was no more effective in inhibiting the organisms than benzoyl peroxide alone.

Comment: P. acnes may have developed resistance to erythromycin, a bacteriostatic agent, as a result of the introduction of topical formulations in the late 1970s or from years of long-term systemic administration of the drug. The emergence of resistant strains poses a potentially significant problem in the management of patients with acne. This study shows that the combination of erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide is not synergistic against the majority of erythromycin-resistant propionibacteria. However, the combined use of topical benzoyl peroxide with either topical or systemic erythromycin should prevent selection for erythromycin-resistant skin bacteria and should also reduce the number of resistant strains already present on the skin. It appears rational, therefore, to avoid using unopposed erythromycin and to combine it with benzoyl peroxide.

How can acne be treated?

Acne can be treated in different ways. The main thing to remember is that it will take about two months of any treatment before your skin starts to look better.

Benzoyl peroxide (in different strengths) clears up acne for many people. You can get benzoyl peroxide without a prescription. It comes in a cream, lotion, gel, soap or in pads. You spread it over the whole area where you have acne (not just dabbing it onto each blemish). Your doctor may tell you to use it once a day at first and then work you up to two times a day. If you start using benzoyl peroxide, begin with a lower strength. Use it once a day at bedtime. Before using it, gently wash the skin with soap and water. If benzoyl peroxide doesn't seem to help after two months or is very irritating to your skin, get advice from your doctor. Benzoyl peroxides can bleach your clothes, so be careful.

Antibiotics can be very good for acne. They can be taken by mouth, or used in a lotion, cream, or gel on the skin. Again, be sure to apply the lotion, cream or gel over the whole area where you have acne. Often doctors start with these but if they don't work, you may have to take the antibiotic as a pill over months.

Tretinoin (some examples are Retin-A, Stieva-A) can be a very good treatment for acne. It is often rubbed onto the skin once a day. Be sure not to get it near the eyes, mouth and area under the nose. It may seem at first that tretinoin is making your acne worse. Give it several weeks to start working. If you use tretinoin, you must avoid the sun or use a strong sunscreen. Tretinoin increases your risk of getting a very bad sunburn. Some come with sunscreen added to them. Pills are used to treat severe acne. Many creams/gels contain a combination of acne treatments such as vitamin A and an antibiotic.

Isotretinoin (Accutane) may be needed to treat severe acne. Accutane comes as a cream and may help less severe acne. It is best in treating cystic acne and to prevent scars. It is taken once a day by mouth for 15 to 20 weeks. Isotretinoin can cause serious side effects. It causes serious birth defects and miscarriages. It should never be taken during pregnancy or even one month before pregnancy. All women must use birth control while you take isotretinoin, as well as one month before and one month after you start taking it.

Talk to your doctor and follow directions carefully if he or she prescribes isotretinoin for you.

Is somehow testosterone guilty for our acne?

I constantly keep asking me – is somehow testosterone guilty for all these acne things happening to us? I made a very quick research on google and revealed that testosterone has nothing to do with acne, except in some cases in women, but not in males.

Logically, being the hormone which regulates the oil elimination of the skin, it should be somehow connected with the acne appearance, I think. Acne caused by demodex appears because of the excessive oil elimination, and there must be a connection between this hormone and the acne occurrence.

Also, if my theory that a lack of testosterone may cause some skin disorders is true (and less testosterone means more acne spots), and testosterone also is responsible for the one’s aggressive attitude, than it is more likely that people with a melancholic character and calm to develop acne. This is a very interesting idea I came to, I think it deserves some researches :)

With various forms of acne striking teens as well as adults, benzoyl peroxide is one of the most common treatments for acne. Using benzoyl peroxide I never noticed some exaggerated side effects. Maybe, because my skin was already too much irritated so it would be difficult to differentiate now what was an side effect and what wasn't. But, as I found on some sites, there may be some side effects in benzoyl peroxide usage, so I decided to post them here.

Serious side effects are not likely to occur. Stop using benzoyl peroxide topical and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; or hives).
Some burning, stinging, tingling, itching, redness, dryness, peeling, or irritation may be experienced while using benzoyl peroxide topical. Contact your doctor if these side effects are excessive. Less frequent application of benzoyl peroxide topical may be necessary.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Some problems with using benzoyl peroxide include:

Dryness of the treated area. If the skin is visibly scaly, apply a light non-oily moisturizer.
Skin irritation is rarely severe. Occasionally excessive irritation may lead to discontinuing use. Consider applying benzoyl peroxide less frequently.
Contact dermatitis (red, dry, itchy skin) can be due to irritation or allergy. It can be treated with a topical steroid such as hydrocortisone cream. Contact a physician if the irritation is persistent.

Ok, this is a quite difficult question. I found on a forum that benzoyl peroxide may be a solution in acne, so I tested it on myself last year. Since then I used more than 5 tubes of Brevoxyl 4%, which, not regularly.
It is important to apply it on a clean skin and to avoid the contact with eyes, clothes and hair (it has a bleaching effect)
Back to my acne… since I started to use twice a day Brevoxyl (Benzoyl peroxide 4%) I observed first just a huge irritation, my skin became even more red and the spots became bigger and I thought “this is the end to all my future friendships and relationships” (I was 19)
But, in a 2 – 3 weeks, my family started to say me that there is an improvement of my skin and that it started to look better. I couldn’t see these changes because I looked myself in the mirror more than 5 times a day and it is impossible to remember yourself as you was 3 weeks ago (after more than 100 looks in the bathroom mirror)
Brevoxyl at first itched and it was an unpleasant sensation, especially in the evening. And it produces and little specific smell in contact to your skin.
But, now, to answer my question in the post title – I think no, Benzoyl Peroxide didn’t treated my acne, BUT it improved my situation considerably.
And I regret I have no photos in that period (it is a little hard to put me under focus) but it was a visible difference with me between and after.

The action mechanism of Benzoyl Peroxide consist in its Comedolytic effect property, though it destroys the comedonnes. Also, it has some destroying properties on the follicular bacteria Propionibacterium Acnes. The best part is that bacteria can’t develop resistance to Benzoyl Peroxide, they can’t perform their organisms to this substance and it is easier to fight them this case.

Who causes acne? At this question we may get on a simple google more than one millions of pages who write about this disease and the causes which may lead to it. I found some articles on net where there are scientist who believe that in more than 90 cases from 100 are caused by Demodex.

So what’s Demodex?

Demodex are parasites which live on the face and in the hair follicles of humans. They can badly damage the facial skin of humans, usually starting at middle age when the immune system is weakened and their population has increased. In the photos below you can easily see, under the 3D microscope how Demodex looks like. The mites can live on all body parts wherever there are hair roots and sebaceous glands however, they are most prevalent in the facial area, especially the nose, forehead, chin, and cheeks. These areas have the most favorable living and breeding conditions and provide an optimum temperature for them to thrive.

It is commonly accepted that Demodex affects more the dogs and not humans, nut this seems to be wrong. Actual theory about acne says in more than 90% of cases the agent is considered to be Demodex mites. As you can see in the photo, it has 8 legs and the mouth of these mites is like a very sharp needle that can directly sting into the cells to absorb nutrition. They like a wet and warm environment and become the most active in the dark. There are five stages in the life cycle. After death, their corpses become liquid and decompose inside the skin. Surely, there are some more agreeable creatures on Earth :)

As far as I know, Benzoyl Peroxide is considered to be skin-safe if is used in concentrations less of about 15 – 20%, regardless to the remedy’s form – cream, gel solutions, etc. anyway, being skin-safe, doesn’t mean that some precautions shouldn’t be taken. In this article I’ll try to cover some major precautions every Benzoyl Peroxide user must know:

First of all, do not let your Benzoyl Peroxide product in some places accessible to reach of children. It’s easy to imagine what can happen in case a child opens a tube with Benzoyl Peroxide and starts playing with all that are inside, or, worse, tries it at tastes and inhales it. So, be careful where you keep your medicines, not just Benzoyl Peroxide product.
Avoid contact of the product with eyes, nasal mucosa, with the medium and intern ear and, also, do not try to taste it or add in some food accidentally. It may seem ridiculous, but being in constant contact with medical personal, as I’m a student in medicine, I hear a lot of stories, some of them dramatic and ridiculous at the same time. So be careful, again. This is not the most toxic product ever sold, but some precautions will save you from unpleasant events.
Don’t use it other way than externally, on skin. It is only for external use and do not try to apply some Benzoyl Peroxide products internally.
Avoid Benzoyl Peroxide to contact with your colored clothes. It bleaches them. Tested on my own – my favorite shirt gained some white spots on it after I dropped some Benzoyl Peroxide cream on it. I don’t have any information on bleaching effect on hair, but I don’t recommend you to test this. :)
When applied on skin, avoid using some other products, till it is totally absorbed by the skin. You can let it some other 20 minutes to completely dry out (if we talk about a cream). Avoid make-up on the area you just applied Benzoyl Peroxide at least for some half an hour after usage. Let your skin accommodate first with Benzoyl Peroxide.

You already know that Benzoyl Peroxide comes in different concentrations, regardless to its form – gel, solution or cream. Basically, as far I as I understood from some other blogs and forums, Benzoyl Peroxide may be produced in the following concentrations:

Benzoyl Peroxide – 8% (more common in USA)

If you are seeking for medical help in treating acne, and you find a doctor who wants to prescribe you some Benzoyl Peroxide based products, then he’ll choose one of those concentrations I provided, depending on your skin condition.
At a 2,5% concentration, Benzoyl Peroxide is known to be effective in easy and mild form of acne, with some spots on your skin. I suppose it’s more for casual usage, when you need to treat some light for of acne.

How did I found that Benzoyl Peroxide treats acne?

It took me a little while to find out that this substance may totally change my skin and improve its condition in less than three months. Yeap! Three months!
Is it a too long time? I don't know. I'm not yet really sure about all the benefits of Benzoyl Peroxide, but I noticed that after I used my Benzoyl-Peroxide-based cream, it was different and my acne were more evident.
So, i read a lot of articles on internet about the cheapest and the most effective method to fight acne. I found in some articles at acne.org that Benzoyl Peroxide may be a good choice if you try to get off your red spots. I decided to give it a try and so I discovered BP's effects on my own skin
I started to use it frenetically in the first days.
My cream has a 4% concentration of Benzoyl Peroxide, it's not the highest concentration at which this remedy is released (there a re more concentrated creams as 5%, 10%) and I noticed from the first application some itching and redness.
So, I announced my mom and sister about my new remedy and asked them to took some observation on my skins' evolution - will it improve or I just got another useless product.
Also, one of my criteria was to find the cheapest product which can stop my acne. Benzoyl Peroxide products seemed to me most cost-effective than any other I tried before. A tube of cream (40 grams) is about to cost you some 5.5 euro or less than 6.5 $ in Europe. I'm sure in USA the prices are, also, somewhere around this average.

Acne is not my friend. I know this from my 15 years old, when my face met my first spots. Than was a big drama happening to me, more because of that I couldn't understand why I must suffer this affection.
